Fairtrade Association Birmingham events taking place during Fairtrade Fortnight 2011

We’ve got loads of events planned in collaboration with the Fairtrade Association Birmingham during Fairtrade Fortnight. From the 28th of February to the 12th of March, here’s some dates for your diary:

LOCATIONS: Across Birmingham & the West Midlands!

Contact for events: John Boyle, Member Relations Officer, Chair of FAB, Midlands Co-operative Society, mobile: 07736 792518

WHAT’S GOING ON? A host of events and activities promoting Birmingham as the leading Fairtrade City in the World!

Members of FAB are holding and supporting events as diverse as a Tea Dance for 400 old-timers to schoolchildren visiting Shared Earth Store in the City Centre; from a Swing Band playing at a Cricket Club to underwear being paraded in the Cathedral!

The Fortnight kicks off with schoolchildren from across the City being invited to Co-operative stores to learn about Fairtrade.

March 2nd: The main event!
DETAILS: Members of the public are invited to come to St Phillips Cathedral, 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm, for a Fairtrade Fashion Show entitled ‘Blood, Sweat and Traffic’. With models showing off People Tree and Revolver World Fairtrade clothing and coffee, as well as speakers and Fairtrade refreshments, the evening promises to be informative and saucy!

March 3rd: Birmingham University event
DETAILS: More Fairtrade wine is being sampled on the 3rd March at Birmingham University; both students and staff are holding their fifth wine tasting event, highlighting co-operative Fairtrade wines and the stories behind them.

March 4th: Midlands Co-op Afternoon
DETAILS: Around 400 members of the Midlands Co-operative Society are preparing to strut their stuff from 12:30 pm at the Tower Ballroom in Edgbaston, Birmingham for an afternoon of dancing and refreshments, all in an effort to raise the profile of Fairtrade.

March 4th: Aston University event
DETAILS: Aston Uni is holding a series of Fairtrade events on campus.

March 5th: LUCIA Charity gig
DETAILS: On Saturday from 8:00 pm Gary Allcock’s “Allstars” are playing swing at Kings Heath Cricket Club; proceeds to the Fairtrade Charity LUCIA.

March 9th: FAB BCU Visit
DETAILS: FAB is visiting Birmingham City University’s Nursing and Midwifery Campus with a host of Fairtrade stalls offering allsorts of goodies, between 11:30 am and 2:00 pm.

March the 10th: Shared Earth school story day
DETAILS: The ethical store Shared Earth in New Street is inviting schoolchildren from across the City to listen to stories on Fairtrade.

Throughout the fortnight, Holy Trinity School will be holding classes organised by FAB member Marcus Belben culminating in a presentation on Friday 11th March at which FAB members will hear learn of the work the school has done.

One of the final events is Birmingham University Fairtrade Fashion Show in their Great Hall. Starting at 6.30 pm, it promises to be a spectacular finale! The event has been entirely organised by the same students who have such a passion in Fairtrade that they’re also holding events on almost every day during Fairtrade Fortnight.

No other city or town is holding this many events – many of which we have not even mentioned here! For more details on any of the events, contact John Boyle (Midlands Co-operative) on 07736 792518 or email john.boyle@midlandsco-op.com.
