Jean Nunn-Price MBE on Fairtrade

Jean Nunn-Price MBE on Fairtrade

Why I’m Passionate about Fairtrade Why am I passionate about Fairtrade? For a start, it’s not ‘unfair trade’. It’s the confidence the FLO label gives to me, the customer, that the produce I buy in my local co-op store – coffee, tea, cotton, wine – is sourced from producers, often co-operatives, that have good conditions for their workers, that do not exploit children, and that collectively decide on the community benefit to be funded by the Fairtrade premium we pay. It’s about trade justice too, and supporting the aim of progressive governments to promote social and environmental development for the poorer countries we trade with.  World trade in agriculture is dominated by multinational corporations and in many parts of the third world one or two companies can dictate terms to the detriment of the farming communities. Women are particularly affected by unfair trade practices because in the third world more than two-thirds of women work in agriculture.  As a woman as well as a co-operator, I want to help make a difference. By putting into practice our ethical values and principles, we in the Co-operative movement in Britain can play a part in redressing the unfair balance of trade through which the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.  We can bring some fairness and honourable dealing into the sourcing of our products.  We can support the social and economical development of poorer communities in the third world. We can support co-operatives within those communities, and we can support the women and children who are so often marginalised or exploited in the so-called free trade system. And whilst it’s important to me that I should buy Fairtrade goods, I also want to campaign for Fairtrade and spread the message to others.  I’m involved with my local Fairtrade group which worked with local businesses, schools and churches to achieve Fairtrade accreditation for our village, and we continue to campaign to raise awareness, for example running a Fairtrade stall alongside the Midcounties Co-operative stall at the recent Jubilee celebrations in the village.  Fairtrade has become part of my life. Revolver World Joins The Co-Operative’s “Co-Operate App”

Revolver World Joins The Co-Operative’s “Co-Operate App”

Today (Tuesday 19th June 2012) saw the launch  of  the ‘Co-Operate App’ which offers exclusive discounts to customers at The Co-Operative. The app which was pioneered by Co-operatives UK as part of its work to promote Co-Operatives during the International Year Of Co-Operatives, is for iPhone, iPad and Android users in the run up to Co-operatives Fortnight 2012. The app includes listings of co-operatives throughout the UK, case studies, events and co-operative news and  GPS feature which allows users to locate their nearest co-operative stores!

In addition the app also includes “Challenges” taking place between June 2012 and July 2013, where users can check in during certain events in the calender and in various different categories (e.g Sport, Learning, Money, Eating and Drinking, etc), to co-operative related entities.

When check in targets are met for each challenge, exclusive rewards and vouchers are to be released to devices who took part in the challenge. Top tip, keep and eye out for challenges starting during the 2012 Olympic Games!

The aim of “Co-operate” is to raise awareness of Co-Operatives:

“To help users better understand co-operatives, the way they work and benefits”

Make sure you check out this incredibly handy app which is now available for download at www.uk.coop/cooperate.

Revolver Celebrates Launch Of Co-Operative Fortnight (News Release)

Revolver Celebrates Launch Of Co-Operative Fortnight (News Release)

Revolver celebrates launch of Co-operative Fortnight It’s a long-way from Kampala, to The Midcounties Co-operative Food in Church Stretton, Shropshire. But thanks to Revolver Co-operative, shoppers won’t have to make the 4000 mile hike to buy the finest AFRICA Arabica coffee. Revolver has done it for them. We have brought together two of the finest Fairtrade coffee’s from the KDU Co-operative in Tanzania and the Gumutindo co-operative in Uganda. Fairtrade is really making a difference to the lives of farmers and small-scale producers in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Fairtrade foundation this week published the latest commodity briefing – ”Fairtrade and coffee”. Despite the growing thirst for coffee in emerging economies, the smallholder farmers who grow 80 per cent of the coffee we drink are still trying to get by on less than $2 a day. Global consumption of coffee has almost doubled to 8 million tonnes over the last 40 years, contributing $23.5bn of vital foreign exchange to coffee exporting countries in 2011 alone. But most of the money from the retail coffee trade – worth $71bn globally last year – is made by a relatively small number of companies in consuming countries that manufacture and market the coffee we buy in our shops and cafés. Co-operative Fortnight is an opportunity to celebrate co-operatives like KDU and Gumutindo (pictured). Please support our AFRICA coffee on the shelves in selected branches of The Co-operative Food.

2012 – The International Year Of Co-Operatives

2012 – The International Year Of Co-Operatives

With 2012 now well and truly under way, we are hugely excited for the year ahead about our participation in the International Year of Co-operatives.

For those not already aware:

2012 has been recognised as the International Year of Co-operatives by the United Nations. This is an acknowledgement by the international community that co-operatives drive the economy, respond to social change, are resilient to the global economic crisis and are serious, successful businesses creating jobs in all sectors.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about co-operatives and their contributions to the socio-economic development, promote the formation and growth of co-operatives and to encourage governments to establish laws and regulations to related to the formation, growth and stability of co-operatives.

The 12th January 2012, marked the Midcounties official launch day for the year of co-operatives with celebrations taking place across various Midcounties Co-operative stores in the UK in the regions of Oxfordshire, Swindon, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, as well as at the the Midcountries Warwick headquarters. Some 5,450 balloons were launched at these events to represent the number of Co-operative organisations in the UK.

Revolver World looks forward to being part of the International Year Of Co-operatives.

For further details and information you can follow the International Year Of Co-Operatives and stay up to date with the latest news and events via their website and Facebook page.

Revolver partners with Co-op supergroup to release Mencap charity single

Revolver partners with Co-op supergroup to release Mencap charity single

Peter Marks (L), CEO of Co-operative Food and drummer in Angel Square with Paul Birch (R), MD of Revolver World

Revolver World has worked with the Co-operative for a while — our coffee is in Midcounties Co-operatives around the country — now we are giving back to the co-operative movement. We’re working with a ‘co-operative supergroup’  of individuals who all work at The Co-operative Group’s Manchester headquarters, helping them to release a charity single this Christmas in aid of Mencap through our sister company, indie record label Revolver Records.

We visited the group at their final recording session in Manchester last month; pictured above is our MD Paul Birch with the group’s drummer… No less than Co-op Group Chief Executive Peter Marks!

We’re delighted to be working with Co-op Group on this charity single – all proceeds will benefit Mencap and we’re also making a donation on the single’s release day. More details will be published next week; keep watching the Revolver World web site, Facebook and Twitter feed for details!
