2012 - The International Year Of Co-Operatives

February 9th, 2012

With 2012 now well and truly under way, we are hugely excited for the year ahead about our participation in the International Year of Co-operatives.

For those not already aware:

2012 has been recognised as the International Year of Co-operatives by the United Nations. This is an acknowledgement by the international community that co-operatives drive the economy, respond to social change, are resilient to the global economic crisis and are serious, successful businesses creating jobs in all sectors.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about co-operatives and their contributions to the socio-economic development, promote the formation and growth of co-operatives and to encourage governments to establish laws and regulations to related to the formation, growth and stability of co-operatives.

The 12th January 2012, marked the Midcounties official launch day for the year of co-operatives with celebrations taking place across various Midcounties Co-operative stores in the UK in the regions of Oxfordshire, Swindon, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, as well as at the the Midcountries Warwick headquarters. Some 5,450 balloons were launched at these events to represent the number of Co-operative organisations in the UK.

Revolver World looks forward to being part of the International Year Of Co-operatives.

For further details and information you can follow the International Year Of Co-Operatives and stay up to date with the latest news and events via their website and Facebook page.

Revolver partners with Co-op supergroup to release Mencap charity single

December 1st, 2011

Peter Marks (L), CEO of Co-operative Food and drummer in Angel Square with Paul Birch (R), MD of Revolver World

Revolver World has worked with the Co-operative for a while -- our coffee is in Midcounties Co-operatives around the country -- now we are giving back to the co-operative movement. We're working with a 'co-operative supergroup'  of individuals who all work at The Co-operative Group's Manchester headquarters, helping them to release a charity single this Christmas in aid of Mencap through our sister company, indie record label Revolver Records.

We visited the group at their final recording session in Manchester last month; pictured above is our MD Paul Birch with the group's drummer... No less than Co-op Group Chief Executive Peter Marks!

We're delighted to be working with Co-op Group on this charity single - all proceeds will benefit Mencap and we're also making a donation on the single's release day. More details will be published next week; keep watching the Revolver World web site, Facebook and Twitter feed for details!

Co-Op To Bid For Lloyd's Branches

November 7th, 2011

Robert Peston Business Editor of BBC News today stated;

I have learned that the board of Co-Op has decided today that Co-Op Banking group will submit a second-round bid for the 632 branches and £36bn of deposits being sold by Lloyds as Verde.

Here is my earlier post on why Co-Op would be favourite to own these branches, once it has made a bid.

Co-Op will make the announcement in the next half hour or so, I understand - but will not submit a bid till next week.

So far Lloyds has only received one bid, of around £1.5bn, from NBNK, the newly created business set up to buy banks.

The bid from the Co-Op is a bit of good news for Lloyds, in a week when its chief executive decided to take a temporary leave of absence, to recover from exhaustion.

Live from the Oxford Fairtrade Fortnight Fair

March 8th, 2011

As part of Fairtrade Fortnight, we're at the Oxford Midcounties Co-operative Fairtrade Fair, featuring a fashion show, free Shrove Tuesday pancakes (yum!) and chocolate tasting with a delegation of Ghanaian farmers from the Kuapa Kokoo plantation are visiting with Divine Chocolate.

We were also treated to some African drumming - we'll try and get a couple of clips up on here!

Free Fairtrade pancakes! Om nom nom...
Later in the day, we got to hear from Harriet and Fatima, two Ghanaian producers from the Kuapa Kokoo cocoa co-operative who travelled over to speak at some of the events during Fairtrade Fortnight - and after that everyone was treated to some (fantastic - and incredibly loud!) African drumming from the Joliba drummers. Photos below, a video imminently - and the second instalment of the Revolver World podcast will feature some of the sights and sounds from the event, including an interview with Fatima and Harriet. Check back soon for all those goodies yet to arrive.

And now, time for some snaps... All of them are available in the gallery, but here are some of the best:
