Fairtrade In Wolverhampton - Extract from Harriet Lamb's Blog

March 21st, 2012

Back in February we were invited to the Mayor's Parlour in Wolverhampton to meet with Secretary Of State For International Development, Andrew Mitchell, Director Of The Fairtrade Foundation Harriet Lamb, Mayor Of Wolverhampton Councillor Bert Turner, Paul Uppal MP, Pat McFadden MP,  and Lord Bilston Chair Of Wolverhampton Fairtrade Partnership.

Harriet Lamb of the Fairtrade Foundation wrote the following on her Blog;

This dreary February has been brightened up for me by my new-found joy and addiction to 'Borgen', the Danish political thriller with a wonderful, powerful woman Prime Minister. It's even better than my other, and laugh-out-loud, favourite, 'In the Loop'. But neither captures the sheer physical hard work that comes with being at the top of the political game.

Last Friday I went to a meeting with the Fairtrade group in Wolverhampton, attended by the Secretary of State for International Development, the Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP. He admitted that his day had started 23 hours before when he boarded a plane in Indonesia. He was remarkably chipper for such long hours – although he did look very relieved to be given a cup of Fairtrade coffee from Revolver World, a  local pioneering ethical company.

When the Secretary of State wanted to visit a Fairtrade group in his constituency in the build-up to Fairtrade Fortnight, we knew just where to go – the Wolverhampton Fairtrade group is famed for its great organisation. And their reputation is justly deserved. Packed into the Mayor's Parlour was the woman who works with schools (the little ones "just get it", she says); people from all the many faith communities, from the local authority, the university,  and local businesses including the Co-op; three MPs and a Lord; and even members of the Wolverhampton Amateur Boxing Club. Excitingly enough, the Club is hosting boxers during the Olympics. Given that all the tea and coffee, sugar and bananas at the Olympics venues will be Fairtrade, it's great to know that the standard will be maintained for the boxers going up North too!

Drinking Fairtrade tea and coffeeWolverhampton is part of the growing Fairtrade grassroots movement that has 535 Fairtrade Towns (there are 1,080 internationally), 720 Fairtrade Schools (with a further 5340 working towards the goals), 155 Fairtrade Universities and Colleges, and  7000 Fairtrade Faith groups. In Wolverhampton, as in so many groups I visit,  it was a pure pleasure to see the whole community pulling together behind the goal of Fairtrade with such a positive spirit.

It's certainly the big society in action - and it is equally surely people with very big hearts who are emphatic in their desire for greater fairness. People want businesses to behave responsibly and fairly - including in the way they buy from farmers and workers overseas. Which is why Fairtrade is growing despite people feeling the pinch.

International Development Secretary praises Wolverhampton’s Fairtrade pioneers

International Development Secretary praises Wolverhampton’s Fairtrade pioneers

Andrew Mitchell, International Development Secretary, is today visiting Wolverhampton to taste Fairtrade coffee from the city’s new pioneers of fair and ethical trading, Revolver World, ahead of Fairtrade Fortnight later this month.

Secretary of State at DFID Andrew Mitchell MP (L), Wolverhampton Lord Mayor Burt Turner (L), Paul Uppal MP (C), Pat McFadden MP (R), Paul Birch MD Revolver, Harriet Lamb Executive Director Fairtrade Foundation and The Lord Bilston Dennis Turner (L)

Meeting Revolver with the Mayor of Wolverhampton, Bert Turner, and the Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation, Harriet Lamb, Andrew Mitchell said:

"Trade drives growth which in turn creates jobs and wealth in communities. Through trade we can help people to pull themselves out of poverty. Ensuring farmers and other producers get a fair price for their produce and effort is central to this.

"Revolver has proved this can be both good for British business and can transform the lives of the poorest. Making a small change to your weekly shop, like buying Revolver’s superb Fairtrade coffee can make a real difference to those who farm these everyday essentials. You are also supporting an iconic local company. I’m delighted that Wolverhampton is leading the way in bringing new, commercially successful ways to tackle global poverty."

The visit comes ahead of the 2012 Fairtrade Fortnight, which highlights that fairly traded goods can guarantee farmers and producers in the poorest countries receive a fair price for their produce and boosting their families’ income. The British Government supports the Fairtrade Foundation to help bring similar promising products to British customers.

Paul Birch, Managing Director of Revolver World said:

"Customers know they can make a difference to the lives of people they will never meet, when making decisions about what they place into their shopping baskets. Music may have the power to change people's lives, but we at Revolver Records wanted to do something more tangible - we're working with famers in Uganda and Tanzaniato make Fairtrade coffee, and cotton growers inIndia to help us make Fairtrade clothes, all of which helps them to escape poverty."

Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation said

"By supporting businesses who work in a fair and ethical way with small-holder producers in developing countries, the government is helping farmers to earn a sustainable living. It’s great to see Andrew Mitchell encouraging businesses to behave responsibly by creating stronger links with those farmers and workers on whom they depend.

“Fairtrade is a living example of responsible capitalism – both enabling businesses here to take a step towards tackling poverty, and a means for smallholders in developing countries to build their own businesses."

The launch event is being held today (Friday 17th of February 2012) at the Wolverhampton Mayor's Parlour.

2012 - The International Year Of Co-Operatives

February 9th, 2012

With 2012 now well and truly under way, we are hugely excited for the year ahead about our participation in the International Year of Co-operatives.

For those not already aware:

2012 has been recognised as the International Year of Co-operatives by the United Nations. This is an acknowledgement by the international community that co-operatives drive the economy, respond to social change, are resilient to the global economic crisis and are serious, successful businesses creating jobs in all sectors.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about co-operatives and their contributions to the socio-economic development, promote the formation and growth of co-operatives and to encourage governments to establish laws and regulations to related to the formation, growth and stability of co-operatives.

The 12th January 2012, marked the Midcounties official launch day for the year of co-operatives with celebrations taking place across various Midcounties Co-operative stores in the UK in the regions of Oxfordshire, Swindon, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, as well as at the the Midcountries Warwick headquarters. Some 5,450 balloons were launched at these events to represent the number of Co-operative organisations in the UK.

Revolver World looks forward to being part of the International Year Of Co-operatives.

For further details and information you can follow the International Year Of Co-Operatives and stay up to date with the latest news and events via their website and Facebook page.
